Let them Hear You

Have you ever longed to hear an encouraging word or the voice of someone? I have. Our world is full of technology. I counted how many times I text in a day or receive one, let’s just say it was a lot!
Texting and email is all good, and yeah it is convenient, but are we fully connecting? The power of hearing the inflection and actually hearing that belly laugh instead of LOL, is a connection that can’t be captured by any phone I don’t care how many pixels and emojis it has.

I had been texting with someone, back and forth for a couple of days. Then, I literally said out loud, “Karen what the heck are you doing.” I text her; can you talk? She texts back, YES.

I called her and we had the best conversation! We laughed so hard. I appreciated all of the sighs, inflections, and interruptions that naturally happen during an engaging conversation. Before hanging up, I said let’s promise to call each other more, I really needed to hear your voice.

I remember my mom, leaving me a VM once after we had been playing phone tag for several days and missing each other’s call. She said, “I know that you have been busy, but I need to hear your voice.”
There is such power in our voice. In my faith tradition, we believe there is creative power in our words. Let’s reclaim that power. Imagine, taking the time to call and check in on loved ones and friends, and the power of using our voices to express our love, our support, or simply just saying hi on a regular basis. Don’t forget, our children and grandchildren need to hear our voices to help ease their anxiety, to reassure them, listen to them and make memories. Do you remember conversations in your childhood that impacted your life and life outlook? Those conversations can become treasure troves for our children when they are older, let’s not rob them of that experience. So, my challenge to you is, to pick at least 2 people that you text regularly and this week, pick up the phone and call them, let them hear your voice.

There is a strong and beautiful connection waiting to happen when they hear your voice. ~KDP
